Disabling Password Expiration on a PC

To disable user profile password expiration on a PC, follow the below steps. For best practice, apply both methods in any order to elicit the desired changes.

METHOD 1 – Command Prompt

1. Ensure you are logged into an admin profile on the machine or run Command Prompt as an administrator.
   1. You can access Command Prompt by searching for it in the Search Bar which is usually present in the task bar at the bottom of the screen.
   2. You can also access Command Prompt by pressing the Windows key + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialog box. Then, type “cmd” in the Run dialog box and press Enter to open the Command Prompt 
2. Once in Command Prompt as an administrator, type the following command and press Enter:
   1. ‘net accounts /maxpwage:unlimited’

3. This will disable the password expiration on your PC.

Note: Disabling password expiration is neither a standard nor recommended practice by Celeratec for security reasons. It is important to have a strong password to protect your computer and data. This should only be performed if a client specifically makes a request to disable their machine password from expiring and the request should be considered on a case-by-case basis.

METHOD 2—Local Users and Groups Management (Lusrmgr.msc)

Note: Local Users and Groups Management is a power user feature only available to Windows Pro, Edu, and Enterprise license editions of the OS. It is not possible to enable the built-in Local Users and Groups Management snap-in for the Windows Home edition. The first part of this section will provide guidance for utilizing a third-party alternative to enable lusrmgr.msc in Windows Home edition. If the PC you are working with is already on a Pro, Edu, or Enterprise license, you can use CTRL+R to open the Run dialog box and enter lusrmgr.msc to immediately skip to Step 3.

1. Download the lusmgr.exe file contained in this article. You can also download the program from GitHub using this link.

2. Double-click on the lusmgr.exe file to open and run the program. Upon launching the program, you will see the interface below that looks similar to the built-in Local Users and Group Management console.
3. Once in Local Users and Groups Management, navigate to the Users tab and select the appropriate profile. You will then see a new dialog box that will look like the below image.
4. Make sure the Password tab is selected in this dialog box, and then check the box next to the Password never expires option. Next, click Apply to apply these changes.
5. This will disable the password expiration on your PC.
